Because We Care — a Perfect Description for Our Volunteer Efforts

While volunteering at the Georgia Center for Total Cancer Care, Karen Birt noticed something. As cold weather approached, and the ravages of cold temperatures affecting the patients so extremely, it seemed appropriate that a Blanket Warmer was necessary.

After presenting the idea to the Union General Hospital Auxiliary members in their December meeting, they once again stepped up to the plate and enthusiastically supported the idea to donate. At this meeting, individual members Martha Horne, Jean Mellor, Sue Chumley, Karen Birt and Pat Cook donated a total of $1,280.00 and the Auxiliary matched with $1,570.00. Karen Birt negotiated with a medical supply company (DRE), and ordered a Blanket Warmer Machine valued at $3400 for a total of $2850—DRE had a “sympathetic ear”.

A special request was made to the employees at DRE to get the machine in production for a Christmas delivery—God performs miracles in mysterious ways!

The unit was delivered on Friday, December 18th.

Tears of joy, hugs, smiling faces and statements of “our prayers have been answered” made this endeavor so rewarding!! Many thanks go out to all that had a part in making so many people happy and more comfortable.
